Vol. 243 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Education Grants.

97.

asked the Minister for Education the number of university students in the academic year 1969-70 who have availed themselves of the new State scheme of grants to university entrants holding four or more honours in the leaving certificate; the proportion which this figure constitutes of all university entrants in the current year; and the proportion of the total number of holders of such grants who are resident in (a) Dublin city and county and (b) Cork city and county.

As the Deputy is probably aware, the award of these grants is made through the county and borough councils. Until the councils receive returns from the universities as to the number of students for whom grants were made available and who have in fact entered on university courses, it will not be possible to furnish the information requested by the Deputy.

Some further weeks will elapse before the councils will be in a position to transmit the details to my Department.
