asked the Minister for Education the total number of staff employed by the Higher Education Authority and the method of their recruitment.

The Higher Education Authority has not yet been established on a statutory basis and pending the necessary legislation for this purpose has been set up on an ad hoc basis. The staff of the authority while functioning on such ad hoc basis are attached to the Department of Education. The number of such staff is eight.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the annual remuneration paid to members of the Higher Education Authority and (b) the total cost of maintenance of the authority since its establishment.

The members of the Higher Education Authority are not in receipt of remuneration in respect of their services to the authority. The total amount paid to the members of the authority by way of travelling and subsistence allowances is £370.
