Vol. 243 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Eye Transplants.

24.

Dr. Browne

andDr. O'Connell asked the Minister for Health whether he has considered the need for the greater promotion of cornea donations to facilitate the increasing need of cornea transplanting; what steps he proposes to take in the matter; and if he proposes to set up a council for eye grafts or transplants.

I understand that at present there is no real shortage of donor material for corneal grafting and that the need for this grafting has been reduced in recent times. I do not consider therefore that a promotional campaign of the type suggested by the Deputies is called for. Accordingly, I do not propose to set up a council for eye grafts or transplants.
