Vol. 243 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Night Pharmacy.

23.

Dr. Browne

andDr. O'Connell asked the Minister for Health if he has any information concerning the establishment of a night pharmacy for emergency prescriptions in larger cities, to be established on a rota system; whether he would approve of such a scheme; and if he proposes to take any action to promote the introduction of such a scheme.

There is no information in my Department concerning the establishment of a night pharmacy for emergency prescriptions in the larger cities. No evidence has been submitted to the Department to show that such a service is necessary.

Would the Minister consider having his Department look into the question to find out whether or not there is a need for it?

We would always look into it but between the facilities offered by doctors, and the drugs they generally have in connection with their duties, and the fact that in a great many cases persons urgently requiring drugs at night may be sufficiently ill to need to go to hospital, I have no evidence that this particular type of night pharmacy needs to be established. We would always keep the matter under review.
