Vol. 243 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lorry Transport Legislation.

57.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider regulations prohibiting large lorries from travelling in convoy along roads, with consequent danger to over-taking cars and to cars which cannot overtake, thereby creating lines of cars behind convoys of lorries and bad utilisation of expensive roads.

Section 51 (a) of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, makes it an offence to drive a vehicle in a public place without reasonable consideration for other persons using the place. The enforcement of that section is a matter for the Garda Síochána. The Road Traffic General Bye-laws, 1964, are subject to review in accordance with the provisions of section 60 of the Road Traffic Act, 1968, and in this connection the problem of heavy vehicles travelling in convoy will be considered.
