Vol. 243 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Care of Aged.

66.

Dr. Browne

andDr. O'Connell asked the Minister for Social Welfare if it is permissible for a local authority to make lodging and maintenance payments to private citizens wishing to take as lodgers old persons who may not need hospital care but who would benefit from such living conditions, being unable to care for themselves; and if he will give the total number cared for under this type of scheme in the Dublin Health Authority area.

While there is no power to make payment direct to private citizens who take in lodgers, public assistance may be paid to persons who require help to meet the cost of lodgings. At the moment the Dublin Health Authority is paying assistance in 15 cases of this kind.

67.

Dr. Browne

andDr. O'Connell asked the Minister for Social Welfare if it is permissible for the Dublin Health Authority to establish meals on wheels, domestic help and laundry services for pensioners; and if he will say for how many in local authority and other dwellings these services are supplied.

The Dublin Health Authority is already co-operating with certain voluntary organisations in the provision of such services but specific figures as to the numbers availing of them are not available.

Will the Minister say how many local authorities are providing them?

This question refers to the Dublin Health Authority.

Has the Minister any details for other authorities?

That is not in the question.

The Minister has no information?

Of what kind?

Has the Minister any information?

That would have to be a separate question.

Thanks. It will be.

Next year. The Deputy is late for this year.
