Vol. 243 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Temporary Service.

13.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is prepared to allow service as a temporary officer to be counted for superannuation purposes by a girl who subsequently becomes an established servant in the local authority service.

The provisions governing the superannuation of local authority servants do not permit the reckoning of service as a temporary officer as pensionable service. This position is being examined at present in the light of recent changes in the provisions in other public sector superannuation schemes relating to temporary or unestablished service, but it is not possible at this stage to say what changes will be made in the local government superannuation code.

Am I correct in thinking that the proposed change simply deals with the type of minor officer who a few years ago had the post reduced to the post of servant and that those are the people the State proposes to include in their amendment?

No. The whole matter is being examined and I cannot say what changes will be made until a decision has been arrived at.

Would the Minister be surprised to learn that this morning I received a letter from his Department saying that the position was as I stated?

The matter has not been decided on finally. It is under examination and I cannot say whether or not the case the Deputy has in mind will be covered.

I appreciate that the Minister is trying to be helpful but does he understand that according to the information supplied to me by his Department only a very limited section, those who had their post reduced from officer to servant status a few years ago, is being included?

The Deputy could not be informed on everything that is being considered because we just do not do that. He could only be informed about decisions about to be made or which have been made.

Will the Minister say if recently he has issued instructions to the effect that the classes to which. I have referred can be considered to be included because an amendment is being introduced to cover them?

Yes, but that does not say that that is the whole scope of the investigation.

I am glad to hear the Minister say that but I am afraid it will be.

It may be that there will not be further results but——

(Interruptions).

I am nearly on the inside as it is. I have more information than the Minister.

No, the Deputy has that information but I also have the information that a more intensive study is being conducted.

I am delighted to hear it.

The Deputy has not got a complete information service.
