Vol. 243 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions, Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he proposes to approve the special water supply extensions to Windtown, Navan, and to Boyne Road, Navan, at the same time as approval is given to the new trunk main from Kilcarne works to the town of Navan; and, if not, how soon afterwards approval will be given to these two extensions.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he expects to convey sanction to the contract documents for the new trunk water main from Kilcarne works to allow work to commence on the water supply extension to Windtown, County Meath.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 21 and 22 together.

As I indicated in my reply to Question No. 57 of 10th December, 1969. I hope to convey a decision shortly on the contract documents for the laying of the new trunk main from Kilcarne to An Uaimh. When work is sufficiently advanced on this scheme, consideration will be given to releasing the Windtown and Boyne Road extensions for commencement.

Is the Minister aware that Meath County Council decided to proceed with the two schemes referred to by him at the same time as the major scheme was going on because of the urgent necessity to have a water supply for those two areas? His officials, having visited the area as far as I am aware, expressed the opinion that this was the proper thing to do. Under the circumstances, would the Minister consider issuing the sanction for the three schemes at the one time?

I am advised it would not be feasible to carry out the extensions until such time as a further scheme in An Uaimh is completed.

Admitting that it would not be possible to bring water to those two areas until the water is brought through on the main referred to, surely the Minister understands that if the county engineer has recommended that the two schemes can be done at the same time as the main scheme, this is the proper way to do it? Will he look into the matter?

I shall look into it again.

I am grateful to the Minister.
