Vol. 243 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions, Oral Answers. - County Cork Schools.

61.

asked the Minister for Education if he will sanction the erection of a comprehensive school at Ballincollig, County Cork; and what plans he has for post-primary education in that area in view of the fact that there will be 700 new homes built there within a few years.

Children from Ballincollig obtain free transport to the post-primary schools in Cork city and my Department does not consider that separate post-primary facilities in Ballincollig would be warranted at present. The position, however, is being kept under constant review in the light of housing developments in the area.

62.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the Ballincollig primary schools, County Cork, are overcrowded; and if he has any plans to accommodate the increasing number of school-going children in the area.

I recognise that, as a consequence of a large housing development in the Ballincollig area, increased school accommodation will be required. Proposals at present being considered are that the existing schools at Ballincollig should be extended and converted for use either as a school for the boys only or for the girls only and a new school built nearby for the other sex; and that two new schools, one for boys and one for girls, be built in the vicinity of Poulavone. As an interim measure, and to relieve the overcrowding in the existing schools, it is proposed to add two temporary classrooms to each of these two schools.
