Vol. 244 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Typhoid Outbreak.

14.

asked the Minister for Health if he has considered the report of the local medical officer concerning outbreaks of typhoid in Newcastle, County Tipperary; if he will make a special contribution from State funds to assist research into the problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have considered the report of the chief medical officer, Tipperary (SR) County Council regarding cases of typhoid in Newcastle, County Tipperary—particularly the two cases which occurred in 1969. Incidentally, there was a considerable amount of typhoid in the area up to about 30 years ago. There were sporadic cases in the following decade after which the position was quiescent until 1967 when one case occurred. There was no case in 1968, followed by the two cases mentioned in 1969.

The county medical officer is carrying out a thorough investigation into the matter in accordance with recognised epidemiological practice, the cost of which will be borne from public funds. In the circumstances I do not see the need at this stage for a special contribution from State funds to assist research into the problem.

Are we to understand from the Minister that half the cost or thereabouts will be borne by the local rates and half from the Central Fund? This is an ordinary health expense, is that correct?

I think half the cost is provided. There is a deputation coming to my Department to discuss this matter further.

Can the Minister say if there is evidence that points to a connection between the original instance of typhoid and the continuation of it in this locality?

Investigations are still in progress; blood specimens and other tests have been made on almost every conceivable person who could be regarded as a carrier. The investigations are still continuing.

When is the deputation coming?

I am not sure but we are in touch with them.
