Vol. 244 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Emigrants in Britain.

39.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the recent speech by Mr. Enoch Powell regarding treatment of Irish emigrants in Britain; and what action the Government proposes to take in the matter.

40.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether any discussion has taken place at Government level on the revision of the Government of Ireland Act, 1949 with respect to the entry of Irish citizens to Britain; and whether the Government has any view on the revision of the Act which would terminate the present arrangement respecting free entry.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 39 and 40 together.

I have seen a report of the speech in question. No discussion of this subject has taken place at Government level and I do not consider that any statement, or any action on the part of this Government is called for.
