Vol. 244 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price Increases.

108.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce (a) the price increases he has sanctioned since 1st October, 1969, (b) the commodities in each case, (c) the price before the increase was sanctioned, (d) the price after the increase was sanctioned and (e) the percentage increase granted in each case; and if it is his intention to adhere to 7 per cent increases in prices in view of the fact that the labour court recently granted increases averaging 23 per cent.

Information in the precise form required by the Deputy about price increases to which I have raised no objection since 1st October, 1969, is not readily available. The information which is readily available is in the form of a tabular statement and I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate the statement in the Official Report.

It is my intention in considering proposals for price increases to disallow labour costs awarded in 1970, in excess of 30/- per week. This does not, of course, mean that increases in prices cannot exceed 7 per cent. There are other costs besides labour costs. It is also fair to say, however, that it has been my experience that manufacturers are voluntarily absorbing at least some of the extra costs including labour costs which they have to bear.

Following is the statement:—

STATEMENT showing increases in prices and charges of which the Minister for Industry and Commerce has been notified and to which he raised no objection in the period 1st October, 1969 to 31st January, 1970.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what price increases he has approved since 1st December, 1969; the reason for the recent increase in the price of coal; and the amount of each increase approved by him in respect of each item since 1st December, 1969.

Particulars about price increases agreed since 1st December, 1969, are in the form of a tabular statement and I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate the statement in the Official Report.

The reason for recent increases in the price of coal was increased landed cost of imported coal.

Following is the statement:—
