Vol. 244 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mental Illness Inquiry.

18.

asked the Minister for Health the number of hostels to cater for how many patients provided in the large centres of population as proposed by the Commission of Inquiry on Mental Illness.

There are at present three hostels providing places for 71 patients.

Could the Minister say where those are?

They are the Mountpleasant Hostel, Mountpleasant Square; Daneswood, Ballymun; St. Mary's Hostel, Phoenix Park and there is a behaviour training centre being prepared at 13 Mountpleasant Square which will have 12 places in addition to those three I have mentioned.

Could the Minister say if any progress has been made in relation to Cork, Limerick or Galway?

We have no other proposals at the moment. There is a group of people in Dundalk considering purchasing two houses in Dundalk which they hope to develop as hostel accommodation for psychiatric patients. The Deputy will know the commission advised that those hostels should be provided experimentally in the first instance to make quite sure that adequate support would be available——

——in large population centres.
