Vol. 245 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork School.

15.

asked the Minister for Education if he has received any recommendations from his inspector since his recent visit to Douglas girls national school, County Cork regarding the erection of a prefab building; if plans are in progress for the provision of such a building; and if so, when it will be provided.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave to a Parliamentary question from Deputy Creed in relation to this school, on 19th February, 1970. It is not in accordance with general policy to make public the content of any observations or recommendations made by an officer to his Department. My Department has not at present any proposals for the early replacement of Douglas girls' national school.

Is the Minister aware that recently an inspector from the Department visited Douglas school, which has no heating, and promised the principal that a prefab would be erected very shortly? Is the Minister also aware that students have to walk about half a mile when they are changing classes every hour?

I am aware that the Commissioners of Public Works reported that a replacement of the school was not a matter of urgency but I explained to Deputy Creed some time ago that I am arranging to have a further investigation carried out with a view to ascertaining whether or not some improvements may be necessary to the school pending its replacement at a later date.
