Vol. 246 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Debt.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance (a) total national debt at the latest available date and (b) cost of servicing it.

The national debt at 31st March, 1970, was estimated at £1,009 million. The amount required to service the debt in 1969-70 was £89 million.

When the national debt was only one-tenth of what it is today, Fianna Fáil said we were putting this country into pawn. Would the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that this Government are now putting the country into pawn and, furthermore, into pawn to foreign moneylenders?
