Vol. 246 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dingle Harbour Dredging.

88.

asked the Minister for Local Government the reason for the delay in his Department which is holding up the dredging of Dingle Harbour, County Kerry.

There is no substance in the Deputy's allegation that the dredging of Dingle Harbour is held up by my Department. My sole function in this matter would relate to consideration of any resolution by Kerry County Council granting financial assistance to the harbour authority. No such resolution has been submitted to my Department.

The only aspect of this matter to come before my Department was a recent inquiry by the Office of Public Works as to the county council's power to provide financial assistance to the harbour authority. This was replied to within a matter of days.

The Office of Public Works informed me that it was the legal section of the Department of Local Government which was now holding up this scheme. That is why I put down the question.

Well known to happen.

I wish to deny this. There may be some mistake. I wish to inform the Deputy that my Department were in no way responsible for any delay in the consideration of any matter relating to the proposed works at Dingle Harbour. The Deputy knows my interest in fishing matters and there will not be any delays if the Department have anything to do with developing Dingle Harbour.

I take it there is no substance in the allegation made by the Office of Public Works?
