Vol. 247 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Warble Fly Eradication.

48.

andMr. Kenny asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that livestock, duly certified by his Department as being free from warble fly infestation will henceforth not be accepted in Northern Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Six Counties Minister of Agriculture has made an Order prohibiting with effect from 15th June, 1970, the importation from here of any cattle with visible signs of warble infestation whether accompanied by certificates of dressing or not. The Minister claims that warbled cattle from here are jeopardising the success of their efforts to eradicate the pest.

As the peak period for warble infestation has now passed the number of cattle likely to be affected by the Order this year will not be great. As the Deputies are aware, the question of a general dressing campaign against warbles in the autumn is at present being examined.
