Vol. 248 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - RCSI Subsidy.

32.

asked the Minister for Education the amount of subsidy paid to the RCSI in 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1969.

The grants-in-aid paid in the financial year indicated were as follows:—

1966-67:

£16,000

1967-68:

£20,000

1968-69:

£20,000

1969-70:

£13,000

Can the Minister state why there was a 40 per cent decrease in the grant paid to the Royal College of Surgeons?

When arriving at the amount of the grant regard was had to the particulars furnished of the financial position of the college. It was decided that £13,000 was sufficient to meet current expenditure.

In view of the fact that certain students are not getting places in medical schools would the Minister consider increasing the grant to the Royal College of Surgeons so that they could take in more Irish students?

The Deputy is coming back to this question of whether we should turn out an unlimited number of doctors. I do not accept that we should.

Give them a brush and let them sweep the streets but do not let them be doctors.

Would Deputy Harte allow Questions to continue, please?
