Vol. 248 No. 9

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Differential Milk Payments.

19.

andMr. Timmins asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he has seen a statement (details supplied) from the NFA to the effect that the system of differential payments for milk is threatening to bring about a serious depression in the dairy industry; and if he will detail the measures proposed to be taken to prevent such an occurrence.

I have seen the statement referred to but would point out that, despite the unfavourable weather for milk production during the past month or two, the total quantity of milk delivered to creameries this year has been almost the same as in the corresponding period of 1969. Present indications are that the total income from dairying this year is likely to be above that for 1969.

Did the Minister say "unfavourable" weather?

Yes, for milk production.

The weather has been most favourable.

The Deputy has given up farming.

The Minister can come along to me any day and I can give him a week's hard work at it.

Deputy L'Estrange may be unaware that the unusually dry May was bad for grass production and milk production, as both are very closely related.

We have had rain in May and June and it is good for grass production and milk production and I know it.
