Vol. 248 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Insurance.

29.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he intends by regulation to raise the income limit of £1,200 in respect of non-manual workers, for social insurance purposes, in order to bring the figure to a level more in keeping with present wages scales.

Since the enactment of the Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1965, variations in the remuneration limit, in respect of non-manual workers, for the purposes of insurability under the Social Welfare Acts can be effected by Government order. Such an order requires to be approved by each House of the Oireachtas. The Government's decision as to the appropriate figure for the remuneration limit in the light of the present rapidly changing pattern in wages scales will be implemented in this way.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say if it is proposed to raise the limit?

As far as I can recall, the Minister made an announcement to this effect in dealing with the Bill last week. I know it is being investigated by the Government.
