Vol. 248 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Location of Road Signs.

103.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that many road signs indicating road dangers ahead are placed too near to the part of the road where the danger exists to be effectively of value to road users; and if he will inquire into this matter with a view to ensuring that these signs are located to provide the best advance warning of dangers ahead.

I am not so aware. The provision of traffic signs, including their location, is a matter for the road authority acting at the request, or with the consent, of the Garda Commissioner. In October, 1962, my Department issued general directions regarding the provision of traffic signs. These directions included a recommendation that danger warning signs should, as far as possible, be sited 100/200 yards from the intersection or hazard indicated, the actual distance to be determined having regard to the prevailing speed of traffic on the road, alignment, etc.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware of the practice of county councils of erecting road notices on roads when repairs are being carried out and leaving them there long after the repairs are completed with the result that signs put up for the purpose of notifying that repairs are in progress are often ignored particularly by tourists who get sick of seeing notices saying "Danger ahead" where in fact there is no danger at all? Could the Minister do something about that?

Yes, I shall look into that.
