Vol. 249 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Offaly Speed Limits.

98.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make an order in response to requests by Offaly County Council extending the speed limit on the Clonminch Road at Tullamore, County Offaly, in view of the urgency associated with this request.

99.

asked the Minister for Local Government if an application has been received from the Offaly County Council to reduce from 40 m.p.h. to 30 m.p.h. the speed limit in Moneygall; and if he will take steps to have this recommendation implemented as a matter of grave urgency.

I propose with your permission, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 98 and 99 together.

I have received representations from Offaly County Council that the speed limit at Clonminch be extended. Representations have also been received, but not from Offaly County Council, about a reduction of the speed limit at Moneygall. All representations received will be fully considered when speed limits in Offaly are being reviewed. This review will be undertaken within the next few weeks.

Is the Minister not aware that local authorities experience inordinate delays in the approval of speed limits submitted by them to his Department? Will the Minister state the reason for these delays and will he bend his energies towards expediting approval for speed limits of the kind mentioned in the question to my own local authority as well?

We are anxious to deal with these matters as quickly as we can.
