Vol. 249 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - College of Art.

30.

asked the Minister for Education whether he will now make a statement in respect of the management of the College of Art; and whether his Department intends to terminate its own direct control of the college.

Draft heads of a Bill for the establishment of an autonomous body to administer the National College of Art and Design are in the course of preparation.

Can the Minister State whether provision is being made for student representation on the governing body?

Can the Minister state whether the legislation will come before the House before Christmas?

I do not think so.

I am sure the Minister is aware that the National College of Art is of extreme importance in developing a sense of design in our business world. There has been much delay in reaching a settlement of the dispute that has been going on in the college. The Minister now tells us he is aware that his predecessor promised action on this a long time ago——

That is a separate question.

I have given the Deputy the latest information on the matter.

Can the Minister state whether the legislation will be introduced in the next session?

I shall bring it before the House as soon as possible.
