Vol. 249 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bord na Móna Superannuation Scheme.

11.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what the position is in regard to an agreement between the trade unions and Bord na Móna which provides for an improved superannuation scheme effective from 4th June, 1970; what he proposes to do to implement the agreement reached with the trade unions concerned; if he is aware of the grave dissatisfaction which exists amongst workers employed by Bord na Móna at the undue delay in the implementation of the improved scheme; and if he will make a general statement on the matter.

A new scheme which will provide substantial improvements in the pension benefits of Bord na Móna regular workers and existing pensioners has been under consideration. I am pleased to be able to say that both the Minister for Finance and myself have approved all the provisions of this scheme and it will be formally introduced very shortly.

I am aware of the dissatisfaction among Bord na Móna workers about the delay in introducing the new scheme. In view of this and as negotiations on pension matters usually tend to be protracted I have, as I have already told the House in reply to a previous question, informed Bord na Móna that I am prepared to agree to operation of the new scheme with effect from 4th June, 1970.
