Vol. 249 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Money Deposits in Britain.

14.

asked the Minister for Finance what amount of Irish money is on deposit by Irish citizens in Britain and the Six Counties; and if he is aware that large deposits are now being transferred to British and other banks.

The information requested by the Deputy in the first part of the question is not available to me since there is complete freedom of movement of funds between this country and Britain.

As regards the second part of the question, I have no reason to think that large deposits are now being transferred as such although, of course, it is to be expected that there should be substantial transfers of money in discharge of commitments entered into during the bank closure.

If I put down a question in a month's time could the Minister make a more detailed statement on the matter then?

That would probably be premature.

It will be Christmas Day.

I do not think the banks expect to have the final accounting completed by that time.
