Vol. 249 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questious. Oral Answers. - Additional Limerick Garda Station.

27.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will reconsider his decision on the provision of a Garda station for Limerick north city area in view of recent vandalism in the area.

I have gone very closely with the Commissioner into the question of providing a station in the northern part of Limerick city.

Since 1st March last the strength of the force in Limerick city has been increased by 11 and there is a relatively high concentration of police cars and motor cycles, almost all equipped with two-way radios, now operating there. The policing of the city is being examined by the research and planning Unit of the Garda Síochána with a view to providing additional resources in manpower and equipment.

If a station were to be provided in the north city area, sufficient manpower would have to be made available for the indoor operations of the unit, with a consequent reduction in the number available for the more important outdoor duties.

The assessment of police requirements in any area is a matter primarily for professional policemen and I accept the commissioner's advice that the police needs of the city as a whole are best served for the time being by the methods now in operation.
