Vol. 249 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questious. Oral Answers. - Telephone Service.

59.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the increasing frequency of crossed telephone lines as a consequence of which innumerable telephone calls are overheard daily by third parties; and when steps will be taken to prevent lines crossing and to secure that conversations on telephones may be conducted in privacy.

I am not aware that the incidence of the difficulty mentioned is increasing. This type of problem is caused by faults in exchange switching equipment or on subscribers' lines. Maintenance staff are constantly on the alert for such faults and if the Deputy will send me particulars of the telephone numbers of subscribers who are encountering the difficulty I will have their telephone installations specially examined.

60.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will have a public telephone installed in the old post office building in Drumcask, Swanlinbar, County Cavan, in view of the transfer of the post office to other premises which are a considerable distance away and having regard to the fact that a telephone is a necessity in the Druncask area.

I regret that the request for provision of a public telephone in the old post office building at Drumcask cannot be acceded to.

61.

The information required by the Deputy is as follows: (a) Nil; (b) Two; (c) Nil; (d) Six.
