Vol. 249 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questious. Oral Answers. - Re-employed Person's Pay.

62.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why a person (name supplied) who as a deserted wife has been re-employed by the Department for the past 18 years is paid substantially less per week than widows similarly re-employed.

Prior to her marriage the person in question had been employed in the established grade of writing assistant. When the question of her re-employment arose, she could not, under the statutes governing Civil Service employment, be reinstated in her former grade. She was, however, offered and accepted lower paid employment as a temporary Post Office clerk. The position as regards widows is that there is statutory provision for their reinstatement in their former grades.
