Vol. 250 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Equal Pay.

26.

asked the Minister for Labour when it is intended to ratify International Labour Convention No. 100 relating to the principle of equal pay for work of equal value.

The principle of equal pay is one of the matters being considered by the Commission on the Status of Women. It is expected that the commission will present an interim report by the middle of 1971 covering the implications of the introduction of equal pay, with particular reference to the public sector. ILO Convention No. 100 will be considered in the light of the commission's report.

Has the Minister seen the latest statement from the Congress on this matter?

Yes, I have read about it.

Has the Minister any comment to make on that statement?

Not at this stage.

At what stage will the Minister comment?

This commission is sitting and I will not make any comment until it makes its report. I am just as interested in this subject as the Deputy is.

Of course. Does the Minister welcome that statement from the Irish Congress of Trade Unions?

I will not comment on it.

The Minister has no comment to make on this important document on women's wages?

Not at this stage.

Nor at any stage.

That is the Deputy's opinion.
