Vol. 250 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sheep Scab Eradication.

142.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the approximate amount spent by his Department and other public authorities on sheep scab eradication in the past ten years; if this expenditure has secured a marked decrease in the incidence of sheep scab; and, if not, if any change in policy is envisaged

The amount spent by my Department by way of grants for public and private sheep dipping baths since these grants were introduced in 1964 is approximately £37,000. Particulars of expenditure by local authorities on sheep dipping schemes are not readily available to me.

The incidence of sheep scab varies from year to year but the disease can be eradicated only if sheep owners co-operate fully by dipping all their sheep during the prescribed dipping periods. No change in the existing arrangements are proposed at present. It is hoped that the requirement to have sheep dipped before grants are paid under the sheep subsidy schemes will result in greater compliance with the sheep dipping regulations.

Does the Minister accept that it will have the effect of eradicating sheep scab?

With the requirements I referred to, I do, yes. You must produce a dipping certificate before you can qualify for the ewe subsidy.

Is the Minister prepared to set a target date for the eradication of sheep scab?

Not at the moment.

Will he ever be prepared to do it or will this eradication scheme continue forever?

We cannot tolerate that situation.
