asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the names and addresses of the firms who hold permits for the importation of footwear.

Permits, or licences, are not required for the importation of footwear. Footwear is, however, liable to duty on importation. In respect of a limited range of footwear for which suitable alternatives are not available from Irish manufacturers, licences authorising the importation of such footwear, free of duty, are issued to persons or firms applying for them. It is not the practice to furnish the names of the firms to which licences authorising import free of duty are issued.
