Vol. 251 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Discussions with British Government.

1.

asked the Taoiseach when discussions last took place with the British Government on the question of Northern Ireland; with what British Minister of State these took place; if further discussions on this subject are planned; if so, when; and what, if any, Government Minister has special responsibility for this area.

There are periodical discussions at ministerial level and through diplomatic channels between Dublin and London on matters of concern to us in relation to the North, including the pace and quality of reform. Such matters were discussed at my meeting with Mr. Heath in New York on the 21st October last; simultaneously the Minister for External Affairs covered the subject in his discussions with the British Foreign Secretary on the same day.

We continue to follow very carefully the course of events in the North and to express our points of view. In this respect the Minister for External Affairs has a special responsibility as the matter concerns relations with another Government.

Will the Taoiseach state if further discussions on this subject are planned?

There are continuing discussions. There is no specific planning about them.

Is the Taoiseach aware that the Minister for Finance said recently on radio that no particular Minister had responsibility in this matter?

I am not so aware but, as I have indicated in my reply, the Minister for External Affairs has responsibility in so far as the matter is concerned.
