Vol. 251 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Pensions.

17.

Mr. Dunne

asked the Minister for Finance if he will now grant ex-members of the Garda Síochána parity of pensions with those of members currently retiring.

The granting of parity of pensions to ex-members of the Garda Síochána must be considered in the context of increases in public services pensions generally. This matter is one for consideration in connection with the Budget and it is not possible therefore to give any decision at this stage.

(Cavan): Could the Minister say on what year the present pension is based?

Speaking from recollection, I think it is 1968.

(Cavan): In view of the drastic increase in the cost of living and the change in the value of money since 1968, would the Minister not agree that it is a grave hardship on these retired gardaí to be pinned back to 1968 and would he look into the position now in view of the completely changed circumstances and the completely changed value of money?

The pensions were revised up to June, 1968. I would point out that this matter cannot be considered in isolation from the rest of the public service pensions. It must be considered with them and it is a matter for determination in connection with the Budget.

(Cavan): Does the Minister not agree that the gardaí who are in the position that he has described and all others in the same position are entitled to be brought up to date—all other State pensioners?

The question does not relate to State pensioners.

(Cavan): But the Minister has brought in all others. I am putting it to the Minister that the gardaí and all other pensioners in the same position should be equitably dealt with.

I cannot add to what I have already said.

(Cavan): The Minister said nothing.
