Vol. 252 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Oil Agreements.

21.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will seek to have agreements made with oil producing countries for the direct supply of their oil products to this country; and if he will make a statement on the advantages and disadvantages of such agreements.

The Deputy's proposal would be impracticable for a number of reasons. Even if it were possible to negotiate such agreements there is no reason to suppose that it would lead to any reductions in cost or increase in reliability of supply or offer any other advantages to the economy.

I would refer the Deputy to the recent Dáil and Seanad Debates on the Fuels (Control of supplies) Bill, 1971.
