Vol. 252 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clerical Assistance for Consultants.

8.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is prepared to accept the recommendation that, pending the designation of terms and conditions of appointment for permanent medical secretaries to clinical directors in the local authority psychiatric services, temporary appointments of suitable persons at salaries commensurate with their responsibilities be made.

9.

asked the Minister for Health if, in view of his statement of 28 Lúnasa, 1970, that in any hospital where suitable medical secretarial staff was not available he would recommend that such be provided immediately, he is prepared to accept the principle of appointing temporarily suitably qualified personnel, pending the making of permanent appointments.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 8 and 9 together.

My sanction has been accorded to all applications submitted to my Department by local health authorities for the provision of clerical assistance for consultants.

Where recruitment difficulties are encountered my sanction will be forthcoming to the making of temporary appointments as an interim measure.

Can the Minister say if clerical assistants are in the category of employees who are in the, say, £11 to £12 bracket?

I am not quite sure of the actual salary but the Dublin Health Authority, for example, have requested permission to create a post of medical secretary which would commence with an increment at a point above the minimum salary scale. I take it it would be something of that kind but I could not guarantee the actual amount.

But it would be above the minimum at entry?
