Vol. 252 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Radio/Telephonic Communication.

24.

asked the Minister for Justice what progress has been made towards modernising radio/telephonic communication used by the Garda Síochána.

Modernisation and improvement of the Garda communications systems have been taking place as a continuing process in recent years. I have appointed a special survey team to carry out a detailed survey of radio requirements in two Garda divisions with a view to establishing a comprehensive radio system in these divisions and to determining requirements, together with costings, of a national network.

Is the Minister aware that the equipment being used in Donegal is in many cases equipment supplied in 1957?

I am not aware whether or not that is so, but that may well be so.

Is the Minister further aware that some of this equipment has been in store and its not in working condition?

It would not be in use if it were not in working condition.

Is the Minister aware that some of the equipment has a radius of only 2½ miles?

I am not so aware.

If the Minister makes inquiry from the proper authorities he will find out what the position is.
