The average number of companies in an infantry battalion of An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil is five. Two sergeants and eight corporals of the Permanent Defence Force are provided for training purposes for each battalion. These may be allocated, as required, by the battalion commander and are considered sufficient for the purposes.
