35.

andMr. O'Donnell asked the Minister for Defence whether he has investigated or proposes to investigate the circumstances of the disaster involving the Greek coaster Ioli and the allegations of delay in getting the rescue services operational; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The question of an investigation into the loss of the Ioli is one for consideration by the Minister for Transport and Power.

On Sunday, 21st February, 1971, the Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre was informed by the Garda Síochána at Miltown Malbay that the body of a young man had been washed ashore near Fintra, County Clare, and also that the wreckage of a small boat which could have been a ship's lifeboat, had been washed ashore near Spanish Point, County Clare, on the previous day. The maritime duty officer discussed the matter with the commanding officer, Haulbowline. After consideration of the evidence available, the maritime duty officer decided that further action on the part of the Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre was not called for. On Monday, 22nd February, 1971, the Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre was advised by the Garda Síochána at Miltown Malbay that a second body had been found at Mutton Island and that wreckage of planks, onions and oranges were being washed ashore between Miltown Malbay and Lahinch. On receiving this additional information action was immediately initiated towards search.
