Vol. 252 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Reservist's Pay.

36.

asked the Minister for Defence if the Government has any proposals currently before it for increased payments for reservists.

I assume the Deputy is referring to the annual grant which is payable to members of the Reserve Defence Force after attendance at annual training. The rates of grant are at present under review.

I might add that the grant is only one item in the total remuneration payable to the reserve personnel each year. During attendance at annual training members of the Reserve are paid the rates of pay and allowances issuable to personnel of the Permanent Defence Force and these payments have increased substantially over the years.

As the reservist allowances have not been increased for many years, will the Minister agree it is high time they were brought up to date?

As I stated in my reply, the rates are at present under review.

How long will it be before a decision can be given?

As quickly as I can arrange it.
