Vol. 252 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Hospitals.

1.

asked the Minister for Health the proposed name of the new federated St. Kevin's general hospital, Dublin.

No decision has yet been taken.

2.

asked the Minister for Health whether formal links with any of the universities and medical schools are to be established by the new federated St. Kevin's Hospital, the James Connolly Memorial Hospital and North Dublin hospitals.

It is expected that undergraduate medical teaching will be carried on under the arrangements proposed for the development of these two hospitals. This will necessarily involve the establishment of links with the medical schools. The form these links will take will be a matter for further negotiations.

Do the staff of the federated hospitals go across to St. Kevin's Hopital and link up with the existing staff?

All that matter has to be considered until a new hospital is built. There was a possibility of developing some out-patient clinics and a pathology unit. All that has to be considered when the body is set up.

Do the federated hospitals staff go across with the existing staff after this link takes place? Do they discontinue their work? Is it transferred to the new hospital?

The new hospital has to be built and the number of beds yet to be finally considered.

3.

asked the Minister for Health the authority under which he can change the management conditions at St. Kevin's Hospital and the James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Dublin.

The new bodies, which it is proposed to set up to administer and develop medical and surgical services in the two hospitals, will be established under the Health (Corporate Bodies) Act, 1961, and I intend to make the necessary establishment orders in the near future. As regards the two properties, it is, I understand, intended that these will be leased by Dublin Health Authority to the new corporate bodies. Dublin Health Authority are empowered to do this, with my consent, under section 89 of the Health Act, 1947.

Will we be able to discuss this order in the Dáil? Will we be able to debate the order in this House when it is made?

I think it is a matter which comes under the Corporate Bodies Act. I do not think it requires discussion in the Dáil. I am not quite sure about that. I will communicate with the Deputy as to whether it requires to be laid before the House for 21 days or not.
