Vol. 253 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Welfare Allowances.

13.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare how much money his Department saves by reason of the increases in British social welfare allowances.

Because of the fact that non-contributory pensions are means-tested the recipients of such pensions may have their pensions reduced when their income from other sources is increased. Their total income is not, however, affected.

The amount payable from the Social Welfare Vote on foot of such pensions is increased substantially every year, so that there is no "saving" to my Department in any real sense.

I might add that if the Deputy has in mind the increases in British pensions announced in the recent British budget, these increases are not due to come into effect until the 20th September, 1971.
