asked the Taoiseach how many people are at present employed in agriculture; and how many are self-employed.

The latest estimate of the total number of persons at work in agriculture, forestry and fishing is 291,000 and relates to mid-April, 1970. The number of self-employed in this total is not known.

7.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of each year from 1954 to the latest available date (a) the number of farmers in the State, (b) the number of agricultural workers and (c) the total number of people on the land.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing the particulars requested by the Deputy in so far as they are available.

The figures for 1954-1960 inclusive are based on the 1961 Census of Population and those for 1961-1970 inclusive are based on the 1966 Census of Population.

There was a slight change in classification between the two censuses. The 1961 figure based on the 1961 classification was 378.7.
