Vol. 253 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Island Butter Subsidy.

63.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether he is aware that the subsidy on island butter has never been increased; and, if so, if he will review the rate of subsidy for the current year.

A substantial decline has occurred during the past five years in the commercial prices offered for this island butter. Because of this, there has been a progressive increase in the subsidy on such butter so as to maintain the fixed price received by producers.

The position in regard to the subsidy for the current year is still under examination, and it is expected that this will be concluded very shortly.

As six or seven weeks have elapsed since the 1st April, will the Minister not accept that the relatively small quantity of butter produced on the islands should qualify for an additional subvention?

As I said, it is that particular question that is under examination at present and I do not think it should take too long to complete.

Am I to assume from the Minister's reply that the result will be favourable?

The Deputy can assume that every consideration will be given to those concerned.

Why can the Minister not be more definite? It is not as if there were thousands of pounds involved.

The reason why I am not more definite is that the question is currently being examined and I would not wish to pre-empt the results of the examination.

The Minister lives very much inland and, therefore, he cannot be conversant with the difficulties of those who live on the islands around our coasts. Despite that handicap is he prepared to ensure that a reasonable additional subsidy will be payable to these people, something in the region of what is paid to the Dublin milk suppliers?

I will bear the Deputy's representations in mind.

I am satisfied with the reply. We shall have another day on that.
