Vol. 254 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Graduate Employment.

31.

asked the Minister for Labour if, in view of the growing difficulties facing graduates from Irish universities in obtaining employment in the UK and USA due to the substantial reduction in the number of vacancies, his Department will establish very close liaison with the university appointments bureau with a view to giving every possible assistance to graduates seeking employment at home and abroad.

The National Manpower Service of my Department is always anxious to co-operate with any organisations including the universities in efforts to find jobs for people here. There have been discussions with the Appointments Bureau of one of the universities and further discussions are proposed. The National Manpower Service does not, at present, engage in filling of jobs abroad.

The extent to which the service can help graduates depends, to some extent, on how far employers of graduates would be prepared to deal with the service. At present, the bulk of vacancies known to the manpower service are for skilled and semi-skilled workers.

Would the Minister's Department help to find employment for the people who will graduate as secondary teachers this year, or get the Department of Education to modify its circular in which it says no additional teachers may be employed in secondary schools?

I do not know when people graduate for secondary teaching.

They graduate when they get the higher diploma in education.

They may seek other careers.

They had better.

In England.

Or in Canada.

If the Deputy has been reading the papers recently he will have seen there are not many opportunities in England for graduates.

Where will they go?

They have more opportunities now than they have had for a long time, and the opportunities are increasing each year.

The Minister is becoming irritated.

The Minister took away the little privilege the unemployed had.

You will never get back to power on that argument.
