Vol. 254 No. 3

Questions—Ceisteanna. Oral Answers. - Mallow Unemployment.

28.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the high rate of unemployment in Mallow town, County Cork which is due to redundancies in different industries there; and if there is any prospect of alternative employment being provided for workers concerned.

I am not aware of an unusually high rate of unemployment in Mallow town. The IDA are constantly striving to secure new industries for all areas in the country including Mallow, but at present it has no specific proposals before it for Mallow. In regard to the redundancies mentioned, I understand that most of those recently disemployed have secured alternative employment in the area and the number of unemployed should be further reduced shortly with the onset of the usual extra seasonal demand for workers by Erin Foods.
