Vol. 254 No. 3

Questions—Ceisteanna. Oral Answers. - Domicile Applications.

40.

asked the Minister for Justice if figures are available for the last three years regarding the number of people who applied to live in this country from (a) America and (b) Britain; and, if so, what they are.

Persons born in Britain are exempt from controls under the Aliens Act, 1935, and citizens of certain countries, mainly British Commonwealth states, who come here from Britain are also exempt from most controls including that of registering with the Garda. There are, therefore, no records in relation to them.

The numbers of United States citizens who were registered with the Garda as being here for three months or more at the end of each of the years 1968, 1969 and 1970 were 758; 877; and 996 respectively. About half of these are permanent residents.

Is the Minister aware that criminals who find it too hot in Britain have moved over here during the past few years? They find this is a haven of rest and they are making easy money due to the fact that we do not have nearly enough police to protect the people's property.

There is freedom of movement as between here and Britain for citizens of both countries.

Is the Minister aware of the number of criminals who have come over from Britain to this part of the country in the past few years?

This question does not arise on the question.

Of course, it does.

Of course, it does.

There is nothing in the question about criminals.

Criminals are moving from Britain to this country and the Minister should do something about it.

Does the Minister agree there is an attraction for people to come and live here?

The country has become so corrupt from the top.
