asked the Minister for Education if he will state, with reference to the school transport service, the percentage increase and actual increase in cost per mile for each type of vehicle used to transport children from the commencement of the scheme to the nearest available date.

From the introduction of the free school transport scheme in 1967 up to the end of the 1969-70 financial year—the latest period for which completed accounts are available—there was actually a decrease in the average cost per mile for large and medium-sized school buses, while there was an increase in the average cost per mile for mini-buses. The relevant figures are being given in the form of a tabular statement which with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:
