Vol. 255 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lough Ree Level Maintenance Values.

16.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will quantify at current average selling prices the values to the ESB of maintaining the level of Lough Ree at (a) 122' OD and (b) 123' OD.

I am informed by the ESB that the information requested by the Deputy is as follows: (a) £19,000; and (b) Slightly more than £38,000.

In view of the comparatively small difference in relation to the total annual budget of the ESB and the vast difference that the difference in levels makes to the boating industry on the Shannon, would the Minister not request the ESB to ensure that the level is maintained at the higher level of 123' OD?

The Deputy is misinformed. The purpose of the present level situation is to ensure that the dredging between Lanesboro' and Tarmonbarry which I initiated in September, 1969 after consultation with all the cruiser interests concerned, be carried out effectively at this time of the year when it can be so carried out and as a result next year and from then on no further problems will arise in regard to navigation on the Shannon system.

If I put it to the Minister that a difference of one foot at Athlone weir makes not the slightest difference to dredging operations, would he accept that? Would he inquire from the Board of Works if that is the position?

I have made all inquiries in the matter and the ESB have nothing to do with it. As the Deputy is saying, the difference between £19,000 and £38,000 is irrelevant; the important matter is to get the job done now once and for all so that this problem will not be a recurring one.

May I take it from the Minister that when this dredging is completed the ESB will no longer require the level at Athlone Weir to fall below 123' OD?

When this dredging is completed the navigation of the Shannon will be absolutely free and untroubled for all of the peak season.

Will the Minister ensure that the ESB will keep the level at the Athlone weir at 123'?

The Deputy is going down a side track. I am concerned about the navigation being effective.
