Vol. 255 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford-Tipperary Schools.

47.

asked the Minister for Education when he intends to sanction the new vocational school in Tipperary town.

The vocational education committee have recently been authorised to purchase a site for a new vocational school.

48.

asked the Minister for Education the up-to-date position regarding the proposed new central school at Newtown, Ballymacarbrey, County Waterford.

The Commissioners of Public Works have authorised the manager to accept a tender for the erection of the new central school at Newtown, Ballymacarbrey.

49.

asked the Minister for Education if he will give details of the proposal to erect a new secondary school to meet the needs of the CBS, Thurles, County Tipperary; the reason for the delay involved; and when sanction for the work will be given.

Plans for a new school to cater for 600-625 pupils are presently under consideration in my Department. Due to the extent of the building proposals to which the Department are committed for the current financial year, it was not possible to make funds available for it this year. The matter will be reviewed in the light of the availability of capital in the financial year 1972-73.

The funds will not be made available this year?

They will not, but interim arrangements are being made with regard to the provision of certain facilities.

Prefabricated classrooms.

asked the Minister for Education the number of primary, secondary and vocational schools, which have been closed in the past five years in south Tipperary and west Waterford; their locations; and the number and location of such schools which are scheduled for closure at the present time; and if he will indicate the proposals for alternative accommodation.

I am unable to furnish the information in the form requested by the Deputy but I propose, however, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate for inclusion in the Official Report a statement giving information in relation to the counties of Tipperary and Waterford in respect of (a) primary schools from which grants have been withdrawn and (b) post-primary schools which have been closed, in the past five years.

As to primary schools scheduled for closure, the position is that in implementing the policy of securing better education through providing larger school units the Department review particularly when the question of the replacement of a school arises, the provision for primary education in the area concerned. Each case is accordingly considered on its merits. It is not possible, therefore, to anticipate what schools may be closed in furtherance of this policy.

My Department have no specific proposals at present for the closure of any post-primary schools in the two counties. My policy in regard to post-primary education is, however, to create school units of sufficient size to ensure that they will be in a position to provide a broad curriculum. The future organisation of post-primary education in the counties concerned, as well as in all other areas, will be considered in the context of this policy.
