Vol. 255 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dairy Products.

33.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if his attention has been drawn to a statement by the President of the NFA on 22nd July, 1971, that it seems that, on the basis of production trends, there will be a shortage of dairy products next year; and if he will comment thereon.

Requirements of butter, cheese and other dairy products for the home market represent about 200 million gallons of milk per annum whereas the total milk intake at creameries in the current year seems likely to exceed the 1969 record level of 526 million gallons. In these circumstances it is not clear why there should be serious shortages of dairy products on the home market by next spring as was suggested in the statement referred to.
